Enable Spreadsheet Keyboard Shortcut to Highlight / Edit Current Cell in Open Office

One of my favorite features of GoogleDocs Spreadsheets is that you can navigate through the spreadsheet with the arrows and when you get to the cell you want to *edit (not erase and write over) you simply hit return and the cell becomes editable with your cursor at the end of the current content. Hit return again and you’re back in navigate mode. The reality is that GoogleDocs lags a little and you need to use some local software like Excel or in this case, the free open source Open Office. As far as I know, this keyboard shortcut isn’t available in Excel (please comment if I’m mistaken!). So Open Office it is..

After installing Open Office, to enable this keyboard shortcut, go to Tools->Customize->Tab:Keyboard. Highlight the key-combination you want to use (I use command+return) in the Shortcut keys box. Below, select Category:Internal and then Function:Toggle Edit Mode and hit the Modify button.

Hit OK and you should be good to go: Navigate around the spreadsheet and when you get to a cell you want to edit, hit command+return and you will be in edit mode for that cell with the cursor at the end of the content.
